Afrobella Make-Up Expert Meagan Shea – Rockin with Res: That’s Just How I Do

Thanks Meagan for the dope write-up and awesome day! You rock!

Bellas, Afrobella Makeup Expert Meagan Shea isn’t just a bubbly personality and an awesome haircut. Far from it. Shea’s a makeup artist who knows her stuff, and is building an impressive roster of clients, some of whom are famous and awesome in their own right. Take for example,  singer-songwriter Res.

I’ve never met Res but I feel a six-degree of seperation sisterhood with her. I’ve always loved her music (Golden Boys still stays on rotation with me), and for years she’s gotten her hair done by stylist and friend, Felicia Leatherwood. Felicia really is like my sister from another mister, y’all. And Meagan Shea who I also love, just did her makeup for her latest video shoot. And she’s here with an exclusive behind the scenes look!

Take it away, Meagan!

HELLZ Interviews Res

Thanks Hellz for the awesome interview and gear!

This past Monday, singer and performing artist Res came to the HELLZ office for a much needed visit. Sadly, she came when the girls and I were doing some Spring cleaning, but either way, it was a pleasant surprise for her and the fellas to come on in. Res has been incredibly busy over the last few weeks as she has been touring nation wide with Talib Kweli, and of course we were here to lace her up in some HELLZ gear as she made her stop in Downtown LA for her Nokia performance. Stories from her crazy sets and hilarious tour stops took up the majority of our time, while we played dress-up with Res and her band-mates. Who needs to re-live their barbie days when you’ve got a life-size doll, like Res?

Ready, Reset, Go

The Philadelphia weekly did a great story on me and my career. Check it out.

Performing onstage with Idle Warship, a collaboration with Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli and Canadian musician Graph Nobel, singer Res vamps in a leopard-skin, Hollywood pin-up dress, her hand folded into a pistol she stabs into the air, keeping time on a song that hangs on that voice, big as the sky and effortless as a bird.

Res (pronounced Reese) still looks every bit the 23-year-old sexy club princess donning a tiara and white wife-beater with the girlie-glossed lips in the Golden Boys video that spun seemingly nonstop on VH1 Soul 10 years ago.

While the singer looks and sounds pretty much the same, everything else around her has changed.

Res spent most of the last decade on a rollercoaster ride through the music industry. On the breakthrough artistic promise of early hits like Golden Boys, They-Say Vision, and Ice King off her 2001 debut album How I Do, Res lived large out in L.A. for years in a beachfront pad, cherry-picking producers and studio musicians and flying overseas for gigs on the label’s shiny dime.

Black Girl Still Rockin’

The alchemy of a song can be a tedious process. Of course you have to find ways to get all the instruments to play in unison and make something happen, not to mention songwriting that at times have to come from certain parts of your soul and brain that the average person pride themselves in ignoring.

Making music is a sexy and addictive process for the people that love what they do. Despite record deals, award ceremonies or stages, there is that need to create. Singer/songwriter Res knows about this all too well: I will always be doing music. At times I want to quit, but I’m fucking good at it. The only times I think about not doing it is based on financial reasons and nothing else. That’s nothing, doing music is what I’m supposed to do. It feels so obvious.
